Over the past 10 years David Burns Management & Technical Consultants have been selected to provide technical consultancy and training services to major UK and European own brand food processing companies, food inspection certification bodies, retailers and food sector institutions.

In addition to our UK client’s, we also undertake a wide range of international projects at government institutional level. Many of these projects are supported by the European Commission and the World Bank with the objective of supporting food trade facilitation initiatives; including the design of national accreditation schemes, development of food safety legislation, and Quality Management System awareness training for SME’s.

With technical experience throughout the food supply chain, our team of professional and legal expertise provide the broadest knowledge for ensuring “food safety” on behalf of our client’s is paramount.

British Retail Consortium

Recognising our technical expertise, David Burns Management & Technical Consultants was contracted by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) for design and development of the BRC Approved Training Provider Scheme and design and deliver its first range of BRC Technical Food Standard training courses within the UK.

Based on the ISO 15161: 2000 Food Standard (and ISO 9001: 2000), the BRC courses are primarily aimed at retailer own brand product producers.

Food Standards International

On behalf of the European Commission, one of our projects took us to Bosnia where our team of experts provided technical assistance in drafting and enforcement of the framework laws on:

	Technical Requirements for Products and Conformity Assessment
	Market Surveillance;
	General Product Safety
	Food Safety

The food safety aspect of this project was based on EU

Regulation for product safety and the establishment of a National Food Safety Authority.

The project also includes the establishment of a Quality Management System and “testing infrastructure”, including accreditation of testing laboratories for the control of foodstuffs and consumer protection necessary for EU accession requirements.

Ethical Standards

With the ever increasing consumer demand for “ethically produced” products and “fair trade” requirements, our team of experts are regularly contracted to undertake independent “ethical audits” of agri-food suppliers internationally against the ETI Standard (Ethical Trade Initiative).

Contracted by major UK retailers and government institutions we have a wide range of industry ETI audit and reporting expertise. For example, over the past three years we have audited a number of chicken product processors in Thailand, banana plantations and pack houses in Jamaica, and leather product manufacturers in Pakistan and India.

In addition to food and allied product audits, our team of experts have been commissioned to undertake “ethical investment” audits on behalf of international funding (donation) institutions and investment houses. These projects include the beneficiary’s compliance with contract and international legal obligations in respect of the; environmental, health, safety, employment, social welfare of its personnel and sub-contractors.
